Project Skills Solutions were asked to provide a lighting solution for a lighting upgrade at the Stratford transport hub. This was an urgent project due to it being the main hub for the Olympics.
Electrical Lighting Upgrade – The Project
Our client had existing external lighting, the lighting was specialist and had been purpose designed and manufactured. The lights had been in service for many years and designed to match the canopy. Their lights were designed for illumination upwards, onto a permanent canopy, and downwards onto the pavement. We were asked to update the lights and bring them up to 21st century technology and refurbish to pristine condition. The light fittings had been designed as part of the existing structure which was to remain. Furthermore the style of the lighting made it hard and expensive to replace.
Electrical Lighting Refurbishment – The Solution
We offered to have the lighting refurbished, upgraded and updated to the latest lighting technology. That way we could save the client money and use the existing electrical lighting fittings that were designed around the structure, whilst still bringing the lighting up to date.
The project began with removing the lights so that they could be completely refurbished. The lights required a redesign of the internal components to incorporate the latest technology for lighting. Once the lights were removed they were completely stripped of all equipment and bezels. The lights being manufactured from steel they were shot blasted to remove all paint back to bare metal. Once back to bare metal the fittings were then powder coated in white. The electricians were PASMA qualified as works required towers and all works had to be permit controlled. All works were carried out of working hours as it is a major transport hub.
The lights consisted of up and down lighters, the latest LED technology was installed to meet the required light output and running cost efficiency. The fittings now looked brand new and the technology used in the lighting is modern and efficient.
Finally the lights were reassembled and fitted with new diffusers and bezels, and tested for functionality.
Lighting refurbishment – To Conclude
Our client witnessed and signed off the acceptance so the lights were reinstalled at site and fully tested. During the project most of the work was done out of hours at night, to avoid as much disruption to the busy hub as possible. The project was a success, completed on time and the client retained the bespoke original lighting designed for this landmark transport hub. Plus the new technology lighting brought about amazing functionality and gave the London transport hub the modern image it deserves just weeks before the Olympic games began.
This is one specialist lighting project delivered as part of a SLA in support of our client Team q facility maintenance projects.
