Buildings that serve the public present the main contractor with an array of design & safety considerations. In the past, the electrical requirements of public buildings would be an electrical supply and distribution throughout the building. Today the electrical requirements are complex and require a design to integrate multiply system packages required for the operation of the building.

PSS Installations are experienced in new builds, conversion and upgrading public buildings and can be relied on to provide a total solution.

Electrical Supply

Electrical Supply Installation

Every building has to have a mains electrical supply sufficient to provide sufficient power to support the power required for its operation. Therefore to start a design incorporating all the systems that will require power is required. The builder now has a choice to include all the various systems into one package for a quotation or split. Procuring a total package reduces the procurement headache and project management of multiple contractors. It is therefore sensible to engage an electrical contractor with the ability to provide all the products and services required. These can then be individually designed the power consumption calculated and the electrical supply required determined.

Electrical & Cabling Design

Firstly, the electrical design engineer has to take into consideration all of the systems that require electrical power. Secondly, they can then calculate the size of the distribution board and electrical cables. Once this part of the design has been complete the design can then progress to the next stage.

As an electrical contractor, we have developed the ability to offer all the cabling services required or the modern public building. Once the power design is complete then the communications and associated cabling design can take place. This can involve the integration of multiple systems as they all interact in the public building’s operation.

Electrical Wiring & Distribution

The electrical design has now provided the builder with the ability to procure a suitable supply into the public building. So, now the design involves the routes of all the electrical wiring from the distribution board to the required power socket positions. This is part of the electrical installation and has to be carried out in stages as the new build progresses. The cabling may be required to be surface run in containment or built into the fabric of the public building.  If the electrical contractor gets this wrong then expensive remedial works along with delays are incurred.

There will be a portion of cabling that is not for electrical distribution but will be part of the electrical package and design. These can be for alarms, telecommunication, Audio Visual, Control, CCTV and Data cabling all which require installing at this stage. Most of these systems communicate over network cabling being IP based so the overall design should integrate these together. The benefits continue through the installation stage with time and cost savings with one cabling contractor being responsible.

New Build Electrical Services for public buildings

Public buildings vary in complexity and the cabling involved may be substantial so a company with similar project experience is essential (Case Studies). So how do you choose the right contractor for your project here’s some help along with the associated services we can provide.

The final stage will require the electrical testing, certification and O&M manual for the new build and commissioning of the associated systems. This allows the handover of the new public building which is ready for operation.
